57th Street started under its current incarnation in 1997 as 57th Street Productions, a DBA of Jeff Kramer doing contracting work and web design. In August of 1999 we incorporated in the State of Delaware to become 57th Street, Inc. Before 1997 we went under a bunch of different names, most of which are now lost in the trash heap of history.

From early 1998 till late 1999 we had an office in downtown San Marcos, near the square. Most of our clients are either on-site or telecommuting work, and we had little to no need for a storefront traffic type office, so we're now more of a virtual company, located wherever there's bandwidth to spare. Sometime in the future we may develop another office space, but not until the need and budget arises.

Most of our clients are from the Austin area, with few notable exceptions. We occasionally travel to client locations to do long-term contracting work, but this is the exception to the rule.

Our server platform of choice is FreeBSD and OpenBSD on i386 servers. We currently have two dual-processor FreeBSD servers at our colocation space in Austin, and two single processor OpenBSD servers operating as our off-site backup and network firewall/file servers. Our client hardware is a mixture of Apple PowerMac and Powerbook, and Intel Windows based machines. We also have a few oddball machines, a Netpliance iOpener and Motorola Powerstack being the most obvious examples.
